Use your refrigerator properly to save energy

Learn tips for an energy-efficient refrigerator, including proper refrigerator temperature.

Energy efficient refrigerator and freezer Whether you have an energy-efficient refrigerator or not (and mad props if you do), you can save energy by using it properly. Store food in covered containers or wraps to reduce moisture released into the refrigerator—this can reduce the refrigerator's compressor use and keep your food from running away. (Annually cleaning refrigerator coils can improve compressor efficiency, too.) And keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible to help your refrigerator run efficiently—they're energy intensive appliances.
Make sure refrigerator temperature is appropriately set between 37 and 40 degrees, unless you like your milkshakes to make themselves. (Freezer temperature should be set at about 5 degrees or lower.) You can double-check refrigerator temperature with a thermometer and glass of water to verify and make adjustments: Leave the thermometer in the water for 4 or 5 hours and check it after that. To double-check freezer temperature, put the thermometer in a cup of cooking oil for a couple of hours instead of in water to prevent Sword in the Stone-type calamity. Lastly, consult your good ole owner's manual for guidance on use and maintenance to ensure a long-lasting and energy-efficient refrigerator.
