Consider
planting shade trees near southern- and western-facing portions of
your home to potentially
save energy on cooling. (Shel Silverstein had it
right...the giving tree indeed!) Shade trees can reduce the heat gain your home may
experience, improve your resale value, and potentially cut down on
air conditioning costs.
In fact, shading your home could lower the temperature by up to 20 degrees, says the
Federal Citizen Information
Center. Deciduous trees are a good bet, as opposed to evergreens, because they allow
winter sun to warm your home after shedding their leaves in autumn.
Before you plant
shade trees, consult green-thumbed nursery staff or your local dendrologist for
suggestions on
native plants, and verify
local codes and standards.
