Use power management with your coffeemaker

Learn how to make your coffee habit more energy efficient by using power management with your coffeemaker and other kitchen appliances.

Use power management with your coffee maker You coffee addicts may own a programmable coffeemaker to prepare that hot nectar of consciousness for you every morning. Often these coffeemakers never get unplugged, so they constantly use electricity, even when unused. Power management to the rescue! Consider unplugging your coffeemaker after it's brewed your joe to save energy and money. Energy Star doesn't label small appliances like coffeemakers, but some models only take a few mintues to set up and start after you plug it in. Your coffeemaker could use up to 5 watts an hour when it's not making coffee, which could be up to 115 watts every day or 41,975 watts a year—like leaving your oven on for 33 hours straight! Or plug your coffeemaker and other kitchen appliances (like your coffee grinder) into a power strip, and turn it off before you rush out the door for work. Using power management with your coffeemaker can help you lower your energy bills and stay awake.
